The Kelp Gull is the only Gull bird on the southern ocean. They are very aggressive predators and any chance that they get they will take any egg or chick that they can. Kelp Gulls have a white head, neck, belly, butt and tail. The saddle and the upperwing is slate black with white on the edges of there wings. There bill is yellow and has a red tip. They eat mollusks, fish, crustaceans, other seabirds, even thier own chicks and eggs, shellfish, invertebrates, and carrion. Kelp Gulls make their nest out of bowls, mounds or scrapes in the sand and lined with vegetation. They nest on beaches, among rocks, grassy headlands, ledges, glacial moraines and offshore islets depending on the location and food for breeding. Kelp Gulls breed in the summer and November to December in the subantarctic. They have up to tree eggs, but only two start hatch. Mottled eggs in an open nest lined with grass, seaweed, sticks and shells. Eggs hatch in 23 to 30 days.
